Finnish PM Sanna Marin condemns publicizing her party video

  • The 36-year-old leader has refuted claims that the recordings’ disclosure was an attempt at extortion.

Sanna Marin, the prime minister of Finland, said that she partied “in a boisterous way” following the publication of private tapes, but she claimed that she is upset that the video, which drew criticism from political rivals, was leaked to the media.

Videos revealed Finland’s 36-year-old leader Marin dancing in a home with buddies.

“These videos are private and filmed in a private space. I resent that these became known to the public,” Marin spoke with journalists in Kuopio, Finland.

“I spent a night with my friends. We just partied, also in a boisterous way. I danced and sang,” She spoke.

In the video, Sanna Marin and five other people can be seen dancing and posing for the camera. In another film, Marin can be seen singing toward the camera while lying on the ground.

It had led some of Marin’s detractors to charge that her conduct was improper for a prime minister. An opposition MP named Mikko Karna tweeted that Marin need to take a drug test.

According to Marin, there was alcohol use at the party, but she was not aware of any drug use.

Meanwhile, her supporters have supported her and accused detractors of using a double standard.

“Why can’t she party after work? Do we expect our leaders not to be human beings?” Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University in Sweden, Ashok Swain, tweeted.

Marin has refuted claims that the recordings’ disclosure was an attempt at extortion.  “I am not being blackmailed. These are private videos and they were not supposed to be public,” the prime minister said, adding that “they are filmed this summer and in a private home. I am not telling whose home it is.”

It’s not the first time that Finland has politicised Marin’s personal life. She earlier issued a public apology in 2021 when a photo of her in a club appeared as a result of Finland’s foreign minister testing positive for Covid-19.

“I did wrong. I should have considered the situation more carefully,” At the time, public television station Yle conducted an interview with Marin.

However, she said that she is an “individual, a person, a real person also, even though I’m a prime minister. So, I won’t change the way I behave. Of course, I have to be careful what I say because it can be represented as the whole government, but I’m still a person and I will be in the future also.”
