DUBAI: India’s captain Rohit Sharma said on Saturday that the team has learned from its past defeat to Pakistan, but that facing their bitter rivals in the much awaited Asia Cup encounter will be difficult.
On Sunday, the two nations will begin play in the Twenty20 competition in Dubai, the same place where Pakistan’s Babar Azam defeated India by a score of 10 wickets during the previous T20 World Cup.
“There is a buzz throughout the camp. It’s a new tournament, a fresh beginning. The squad moves on by trying not to reflect on what has happened in the past, Rohit told reporters.
Without a doubt, playing against Pakistan will be difficult, but for us, what matters is what the team is thinking collectively about and what we hope to accomplish during the tournament.
Due to political unrest, the two teams only compete in multi-nation competitions, and the outcome of their previous encounter has been a topic of discussion in the run-up to the six-nation Asia Cup.
It was Pakistan’s first World Cup victory over India, but Rohit says they had moved past the defeat.
The way we develop as a team is through discussing our setbacks. Although I believe it has been a while since that game, the loss certainly upset us at the time, said Rohit.
“We take lessons from our errors. We’re starting over right now, and the team has clearly played a lot of T20 cricket. We won’t dwell too much on what happened in October because it happened so long ago.
The players from both sides have shown a lot of comradery in Dubai, and on Friday, Rohit went out of his way to greet a group of applauding Pakistani fans at the practicing location.
Azam and Indian superstar Virat Kohli also greeted one another, which was unusual given that the two countries have fought three wars together, including two over the disputed territory of Kashmir.
